My Caregiving Life
I began caregiving after my mother suffered a stroke in 2007. A year later my mom and dad moved to an apartment in a local continuing care community.
Mom eventually moved to the skilled care wing where she lived for 5 years. I gave up my teaching responsibilities in 2013 to devote more time and energy toward helping them both. We spent hours remembering the crazy and fun days about the past, especially when all seven of us lived at home Those memories are in my book Grace on the Ledge. She passed away peacefully in February 2015.
Dad and I were care partners for 7 more years. After a brief illness, he passed away in March 2022, eleven days before his 99th birthday! We both knew how lucky we were to have each other.
My goal is to support and encourage caregivers with my writing and workshops where I teach how to discover some moments of true peace even in the middle of the whirlwind of changes that caregiving often finds us.
